Getting started with Moodle

The first thing you’ll need to do is log onto ORVSD and CREATE a Moodle course.

To start, your Moodle course will be a blank slate, ready to be molded into whatever you want it to be. At this point you have a couple of options:

1. Test the waters (it feels fine!) – Treat the list of Moodle features as an a la carte menu. Give each one a taste and see what works best for you and your students. You might try…

  • Creating a one-time test or survey that your students can take
  • Starting a classroom blog where you can recap what happened in class that day and post homework assignments
  • Uploading videos and podcasts for students to access online

2. Dig a little deeper – Create a complete lesson by combining different Moodle features. Your lesson might include…

  • Readings, videos and podcasts.
  • A discussion forum to review highlights and discuss perspectives
  • A glossary of terms related to the lesson
  • Quizzes to test key knowledge

3. Practice your advanced moves – Once you’ve tested out the features and have an understanding of how to build a lesson, you’re ready to build an entire course online. You will now be able to…

  • Save time by reusing the same course from year to year
  • Make course updates directly in Moodle
  • Track student progress
  • Help students review past material easily
